PPR, PVC or HDPE — Which Pipe Do You Need?
PPR Pipes — Hot and Cold Water Supply
PPR is the correct pipe for all internal hot and cold water supply in residential buildings in Kenya. Pipes are joined by heat fusion — a welding process that creates joints stronger than the pipe itself. Once installed correctly, a PPR system will not leak at joints. It handles temperatures up to 95°C, making it the only suitable material for hot water from a geyser. Never use PVC for hot water lines — it softens under heat, joints fail, and you get water damage inside walls.
PVC Pipes — Cold Water and Drainage
PVC covers cold water distribution and all drainage — waste pipes from sinks, WCs, showers, and rainwater downpipes. More affordable than PPR and straightforward to install with solvent cement. For any pipe carrying water that will never be heated, PVC is the right choice.
HDPE Pipes — Underground and Borehole
High-density polyethylene goes underground. Borehole rising mains, supply lines from a water tank to a house, or mains supply from the street — HDPE handles all of these. Flexible, pressure-rated, and highly resistant to soil chemicals.

What Size Water Tank Does a 3-Bedroom House Need?
A 3-bedroom household of 4–6 people uses approximately 100–150 litres of water per day. A 2,000L tank gives you 13–20 days of supply in a complete outage. A 3,000L tank extends that to 20–30 days. If connecting a borehole, size up to 5,000L or 10,000L to allow for pump cycling.
Electric Geyser vs Solar Water Heater
An electric geyser costs KSh 15,000–40,000 to buy and adds KSh 1,500–4,000 to your monthly electricity bill. A solar water heater costs KSh 80,000–200,000 installed but the running cost is essentially zero. In Kiambu County, most households recover the price difference in electricity savings within 3–5 years. For a house you plan to live in long-term, solar is the financially correct decision.
