Which Rebar Size Does Your Project Need?

Y8 — Stirrups and Light Reinforcement

Y8 bars weigh 2.37kg per 6-metre length. Their primary role is as stirrups (shear links) in beams and columns, and as secondary reinforcement in slabs. Rarely used as main structural bars in anything larger than a lightweight slab.

Y10 and Y12 — Standard Residential

These two sizes cover the vast majority of residential construction in Kiambu County. Y10 at 200mm centres in both directions is the most common slab specification for a standard residential ground floor and roof slab. Y12 is used for ring beams, ground beams, and columns in a standard two- or three-storey house. If your structural engineer has specified Y10 and your supplier is suggesting Y8 to save money, refuse. Rebar specifications are load calculations, not suggestions.

Y16 and Y20 — Structural and Commercial

Y16 and Y20 appear in heavily loaded columns, transfer beams, and any element carrying significant structural load. If your residential engineer has called for Y16, it’s because your design needs it. This is not an area to query cost savings.

BRC Mesh vs Deformed Bars

BRC mesh (welded wire fabric) speeds up slab reinforcement — instead of laying individual bars and tying every intersection, you roll out sheets. For a ground-bearing slab or pathway, this saves significant labour. For suspended slabs, the structural engineer usually specifies Y bars at specific sizes and spacing that a standard mesh sheet cannot always provide. Check your drawings. If the engineer specifies mesh, use mesh. If the drawings show Y bars at specific centres, use Y bars. Never substitute without approval.

KEBS Certification — Why It Matters

All structural steel in Kenya must meet Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) specifications. Non-certified rebar has inconsistent carbon content, unpredictable yield strength, and may fail under load. Pioneer Hardwares stocks KEBS-certified steel only. When buying from any supplier, ask for the mill certificate. If they can’t provide one, don’t buy the steel.
